Live SEO Support 12/16/20 – Full Episode
Welcome to another episode of Live SEO Support!
Live SEO Support is an hour-long Weekly Livestream where our founders, Nicholas Altimore and Chris Tzitzis, take questions from the audience on anything related to SEO.
But in case you missed us live this week, here’s the full episode:
This Week’s Archived Livestream:
[0:40] Repurposing an expired domain from one niche (video gaming) to another (casino)
[17:14] I am having Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) issues on my site. What plugin should I use to solve it?
With regard to page speed issues, you can use WP Rocket attached to a CDN like Cloudflare. It’s a simple enough process to be able to do yourself; but you can also hire people on Fiverr to do this for you.
Just note that page speed issues will not necessarily affect ranking in a dramatic way. User experience should be your bigger priority in this case.
[21:41] Geo-relevant PBN backlink which is half the “power” of a topically relevant backlink—who wins?
These are only two variables in a much larger picture of what makes a good backlink. The idea is to blend both naturally to get to the best of both worlds.
Look at your link profile. If all of your links are highly relevant, then throwing in a powerful but irrelevant link can be great for you. But the point is to not throw in only links that are powerful but not relevant.
[25:22] I have a water damage restoration client. New company, new website. How much do I pay you guys to rank it?
We handle link building for a minimum of $500 per month in our Managed Link Building Program. There is no service fee for the program itself. This is not a full service SEO program. You handle the content yourself. A newbie should allot a budget covering six months to be safe.
[28:24] Can my domain do clean backlinks to outrank? I’m about to do pillow and diversity links but I don’t have the exact business location. Is this going to be a problem for SirLinksalot? Can I optimize the homepage only?
No. If you don’t want to give us an address for the citations, we can use a random one. If you have an affiliate site with conflicting citations, the address really doesn’t matter.
You need to optimize every page that you want to rank and not just the homepage.
[32:43] My traffic has been falling after the December 3 update. Are there any other aspects I should look at apart from speed?
It’s probably still too early to call; but speed will never be a huge ranking factor. It’s only the bare minimum that you really need to be worried about.
Look elsewhere for possible issues that explain why you’re losing traffic, especially the niche itself. A lot of websites, particularly review (i.e. “best of”) websites are losing ground to authority and ecommerce websites. Focus on long-tail keywords where you see websites similar to yours in the same area.
[35:45] Dude, you’re only ranking for a long-tail keyword.
Even websites with a high amount of authority can rank for more general keywords. They don’t need to go after long-tail keywords to pull in traffic.
[38:50] I 301 redirected the tag/post to the main post, like you advised last week. Anything else that I need to do? I still see the bad URL appearing on SERPs, but not the good one.
It can take a while for the URL to disappear from the SERPs. It depends on how often your site is being crawled by Google.
But even if your site is being crawled often, it can still take some time to drop out of the SERPs.
If you haven’t already, you should also click on the link to make sure that the old page doesn’t exist anymore and that it’s actually forwarding to the new one. Errors like that do happen.
[41:29] Any insights on Google Guarantee?
If you’ve got the budget for it and it makes sense from an ROI perspective, go for it. If your SERP has this feature, you will probably want to play along.
[45:37] What’s your favorite research tool?
For keyword research, Keywords Everywhere. For overall research, Ahrefs.
[47:09] What do you guys think of RankMath? If you don’t like it, what do you recommend?
It works very similarly to Yoast. You can’t really go wrong with either of them; but Yoast is already tried-and-true, so we stick to it.
[50:37] What are your thoughts on the new Majestic tool? I saw a Facebook post saying that it is now revealing Tier 2-3 links.
Majestic can be used for grabbing generic information, but you don’t need to rely on it too much when running your SEO campaigns.
Ahrefs also lets you see these links, but Majestic definitely makes it a much more convenient process (which is also visually appealing).
