This Week’s Archived Livestream:

Summary:

[14:32] Will the backlinks to a Dutch site still be useful if the site is translated into English?

Yes, the backlinks will still be useful. It’s common for sites to receive links from multiple geographic regions. You should not encounter any issues. However, we think best practice is to focus on getting backlinks from the location you’re trying to rank for.

[17:22] Hello, I have just started my SEO journey with a budget of $2000 for one project. Should I pursue blogging AdSense or Affiliate marketing?

We advise anyone wanting to start an SEO project to not rush into it or invest too much money to the point that it causes stress or desperation when things aren’t going as planned. One should develop a proof of concept and work on a feasible project during spare time (and expect / plan for progress to move slowly).

Regarding which avenue to choose for an initial SEO project, we think building Local SEO sites is the easiest route to go. Affiliate marketing is more difficult. But it’s definitely possible to make some monthly income from an affiliate site, but with $2000, expect to be doing a lot of work yourself (it might help to enjoy the writing aspect of it). Having said, we still think Local SEO is an easier entry point.

[26:28] We have a client with 22 franchises all over the Netherlands. However, 1 franchise decided to go solo and now outranks the other franchises when the parent company is Googled (it’s GMB shows up). Would it help to create local citations to the location we prefer?

First of all, yes we absolutely advise that you add those new local citations for your target location. There may also be legal ramifications for the franchisee who decides to go solo that you may want to look into. If that franchisee is outranking you with an individual website, then you will need to work on making your assets better and more competitive (like you would any site that’s trying to rank in the SERPs).

[35:58] Is it easier to rank a non-English site compared to an English one?

Nick:

I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s easier because you’re still going to be competing, but it does seem like one can get away with more manipulative tactics in foreign / non-English SERPs. We also think the Google algorithms are more finely tuned for English content.

[43:20] What do y’all think about the future of Web 3.0?

It seems like Search functionality will be even more important in a more decentralized ecosystem. It could also mean that Voice search will become increasingly important. Other than that, it’s hard for us to predict what mainstream Web 3.0 technologies (and how they’re related to Search) will look like given that these platforms are still in development and it will be quite a while before they are the norm.

[48:34] Where do you find expert level writers for your niche? Particularly subject matter experts with first-hand experience.

Based on a poll we conducted, the top source for procuring quality writers is Upwork by and large. Other notable mentions include PeoplePerHour and even AI tools (although we don’t really trust AI tools for the type of quality content we desire for certain projects).

Having said that, sometimes the best way to find subject matter experts is through your own personal / professional network. This would include friends, family, coworkers, and colleagues. You never know who is interested in making some extra money by writing.

[58:32] Is it harmful to translate English articles into another language?

The simple answer is no. However, it’s best practice not to make big changes to something that’s already working pretty well.
