Welcome to another episode of Live SEO Support!
Live SEO Support is an hour-long Weekly Livestream where our founders, Nicholas Altimore and Chris Tzitzis, take questions from the audience on anything related to SEO.
But in case you missed us live this week, here’s the full episode:
This Week’s Archived Livestream:
[8:03] Can you rank in foreign SERPs with only US-based guest posts?
Quality US-based backlinks will always help a site to rank. However, it is best practice to focus on link diversity and making sure your site is replicating the natural amount of backlinks that are normal for the country you’re trying to rank for (based on the location of those links).
Keep in mind, your website’s language and target audience should influence the backlinks you get no matter what country the site is based in.
[35:41] Is link building worth doing before you do on-page SEO?
Yes, it’s okay to begin off-page SEO (link building) before doing on page. Sometimes you may not have any choice but to do on-page optimization later.
If this is the case, the backlinks you get now are still going to have value and send link juice. Just make sure you take care of your on page as soon as possible.
Check out our on-page SEO guide if you need to learn the basics.
[40:50] Should you send powerful backlinks to your homepage or a specific page (e.g., 90 DR)?
It depends on your backlink profile and how your site is performing overall. For example, if your site isn’t doing too well in the SERPs (e.g., falling traffic), then you could try boosting it with a very powerful link to your homepage. Same thing with an inner page that isn’t ranking too well.
[44:31] Is it a PBN link if it’s not on the homepage?
The simple answer is yes. A PBN link still works if it’s placed in an article anywhere on the website. However, homepage links are the most powerful PBN links you can get.
[53:59] Do orphan pages matter for SEO if you don’t care about ranking them?
It depends on the orphan page content. If they are category pages, for example, our advice would be to un-orphan the pages and use them to help web crawlers. Add inner links to them and let the link juice flow.
[1:04:12] Are meta descriptions needed for every article on a site?
They might not be absolutely essential for ranking, but we use meta descriptions for all of our blog posts because we consider it a best practice.
Search terms are bolded in meta descriptions and Google can modify a meta description using content from another part of an article if it contains relevant keywords for a specific search user.
[1:12:05] Is it okay to inner link to the same page twice from an article (from different positions)?
Yes, it’s perfectly acceptable to link to another page more than once from the same article/page (e.g, main body, comment section, footer).
[1:15:16] How do you value expired domains for SEO value?
Some of the basic things I’m going to look for when evaluating expired domains are:
- Overview of the backlink profile
- Anchor text diversity
- Archive.org history
But I also ask myself: why do I want the site and what it’s worth to me (and my goals)? So its value depends a lot on what you think you can do with it in the future.
You can also learn a lot by observing or participating in domain auctions.
